{New Sangha Offering} Thai Yoga Massage by appointment with Heather Morowitz

Sometimes referred to as The Lazy Person’s Yoga, Thai Massage originated in Thailand over 2500 years ago. Locals received this massage as a necessary means to sustaining their health as well as an occasional sensory indulgence. This technique applies rhythmic pressure along the body’s energetic channels to stimulate blood flow to the muscles and connective tissue, while gently realigning the bones and releasing tension.  This massage can also sustain your energetic health in the same manner some people employ by practicing regular yoga and meditation

Thai Massage is a unique blend of curative touch and a luxurious flow of bodywork. As practitioner and recipient move in harmony with one another, an individualized understanding of the recipient’s flexibility, stability and body limitations is experienced, and balance is intelligently restored.

Thai Massage is done without the use of lotions or oils. It is practiced on a mat and the recipient should dress in loose, comfortable clothing.

About Greg

Greg Franklin (200hr RYT), has been practicing various forms of yoga & bodywork for the past 15 years. After a two-year world traveling sojourn inspired by a hand reader, HH the 14th Dalai Lama, and a moldy backpack, he made his way to New York City, where he discovered (among other things) AcroYoga, a practice which he wholeheartedly adores. You can often find him overtaking cabs on his bicycle through the city street

About Sarita

Sarita is a movement expert. Her passion is to share health and happiness through dance and yoga. Her mission is to “Create a World where Every Body Dances.” She has been teaching dance since she was 18 and has taught children and adults movement forms such as Step, West African, Jazz, Ballet, and Modern.

Sarita began teaching yoga two years ago and can currently be found teaching locally at Good Yoga in Brooklyn, NY. Her yoga classes are based in kundalini tantra tradition; a hatha practice with focus on mantra, meditation, and chakra opening.

Sarita received her B.A. from UCLA in Dance and was certified to teach yoga by Psalm Isadora in 2008. Sarita recently completed advanced yoga training in Vizag, India with Sri Amritananda of the Sri Vydia lineage.

Whether teaching dance or yoga Sarita brings her sense of Big Soul to class. She infuses every class with a sense of openness and joy, and sees every moment as an opportunity to live your yoga and get in the groove with life. If she doesn’t make you move, nothing will!

About Reflexology:

Reflexology is a scientific art based on the principle there are zones and reflux areas in the feet. These correspond to all organs, glands and body parts. Stimulating the feet with thumb and finger techniques create physiological changes in the body that facilitate healing. Reflexology is a cousin to acupuncture in that they both stimulate points and meridian channels in the body. For those that would like more touch and are perhaps afraid of needles would enjoy reflexology.

We suggest Reflexology for:

  • People of all ages including babies and the elderly
  • Women who are pregnant or expect to become pregnant
  • Those suffering body trauma
  • Restoring emotional, physical and spiritual balance

Megan Burke found reflexology while searching for healing ways to nurture the body. She has a B.A. degree in Psychology and now years later has put it to use with reflexology. Training in mind, body and spirit has become full circle by helping people move through stuck areas of their lives through reflexology. Megan is a nationally certified reflexologist with the ARCB, American Reflexology Certification Board. She received her training at The Open Center in Soho. She specializes in chakra balancing through the feet.

Foot Reflexology for Yogis

posted by Megan

Why is foot reflexology good for yogis? Reflexology is good for everyone, however, for a yogi I feel it is even more special. It takes the foot and honors each bone, tendon, muscle and nerve. Like with the many poses in yoga honor each body part, organ and system.

Inward Exploration:

Ah, what a joy it is for me to work on yogis feet. Yogis have made a commitment to going inward through their practice. Reflexology is another way to go inward.  A yogi begins a relationship with their interior body and explores which areas feel like a flowing creek or a stagnant pond. They are willing to look at that. Reflexology aids in laying our stuff out on the table to reorganize and sift through what we no longer need.

Breathwork:

Yogis have established a relationship with their breath from their practice. They see how breathing through difficult poses can get them through other difficult areas of their life. While lying on the table in a reflexology session the yogi is given an opportunity to explore their breath in a relaxing, nourishing way.  A yogi can use their breathing practice in a new arena where they are receiving the benefits of their practice. The aid of aromatherapy serves as icing on the cake of their pranayama session.

Poses:

Perhaps standing poses are a yogis least favorite? Or is it forward bends? How can we work through that by going to the feet? If we release tension in different areas of the feet we can open up blocked energy to feel better in those tough poses.  Often, I also find that the areas of the feet that need more attention correlate to these same poses.  Does the yogi try to avoid those challenging core poses? Let’s spend some time on the belly of the foot and get things moving.

Join me on a journey of the self through the feet, tree pose will feel all the sweeter for you as you grow and thrive!
