{New Sangha Offering} Thai Yoga Massage by appointment with Heather Morowitz

Sometimes referred to as The Lazy Person’s Yoga, Thai Massage originated in Thailand over 2500 years ago. Locals received this massage as a necessary means to sustaining their health as well as an occasional sensory indulgence. This technique applies rhythmic pressure along the body’s energetic channels to stimulate blood flow to the muscles and connective tissue, while gently realigning the bones and releasing tension.  This massage can also sustain your energetic health in the same manner some people employ by practicing regular yoga and meditation

Thai Massage is a unique blend of curative touch and a luxurious flow of bodywork. As practitioner and recipient move in harmony with one another, an individualized understanding of the recipient’s flexibility, stability and body limitations is experienced, and balance is intelligently restored.

Thai Massage is done without the use of lotions or oils. It is practiced on a mat and the recipient should dress in loose, comfortable clothing.

How did you get into Acupuncture?
The short story…..At 30 years of age I broke off an engagement, found myself unemployed for the 3rd time and had an existential “what if” moment that put me on this path. I would have never thought I’d be so suited to practicing Acupuncture – but here I am – proof that you can always find your path.

Are their different types of Acupuncture?  Which do you practice?

Classical 5 Element Acupuncture . . . In Chinese medicine, all of nature can be explored through the model of the five elements: Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal. These five elements function according to natural laws and also govern the human body, the energy or “Qi” pathways in the body called meridians and all aspects of the cycle of birth, life and death.

At the heart of Classical Five element Acupuncture is the belief that many physical ailments which people suffer from today are the product of emotional distress as much as any physical cause. The aim of Classical Five Element Acupuncture is to isolate the cause of disease. Energetic blocks that are causing physical and/or emotional level distress are made and treated. By working with the elemental root of imbalance, the acupuncture practitioner guides a person’s energy back towards its healthiest potential, energizing the self-healing and regenerating capacity of the body, mind and spirit.

10 Reasons To Try Acupuncture
1. Acupuncturists view each person as a dynamic and holistic being. Every atom, cell tissue and organ is interrelated and interconnected, functioning as an integrated whole.

2. Acupuncture helps to energize the self-healing capacity of the body.

3. Acupuncture can be used as preventative medicine.

4. Acupuncture can help support and strengthen your immune system.

5. Acupuncture can assist with drug recovery, alcohol addiction and quitting smoking.

6. Acupuncture can treat over 50 western medical diseases, disorders and symptoms, including pain, arthritis, infertility, headaches and allergies.

7. Acupuncture is an effective alternative to drugs for treatment of depression.

8. Acupuncture provides a natural approach for asthma.

9. Acupuncture improves the chances of becoming pregnant when used with other reproductive techniques.

10. Acupuncture Works!

Seasonal Allergies and Acupuncture

If you experience seasonal allergies, try acupuncture!

From Sharon Gordon M.Ac., L.Ac.

Acupuncture has been used to treat seasonal allergies for centuries with great success. According to traditional medicine, treatment is directed toward clearing the nasal passages, supporting the immune system and strengthening the systems of the body to prevent allergic reactions from recurring.

What are Seasonal Allergies?

Commonly called hay fever or allergic rhinitis, a seasonal allergy is an allergic reaction to a trigger that is typically only present for part of the year, such as spring or fall. Pollens that are spread by the wind are usually the main cause of seasonal allergies. People who are allergic to pollens are also often sensitive to dust mites, animal dander, and molds.

Spring is traditionally the main season when allergies blossom because of new growth on trees and weeds. But fall, with a whole different set of blooming plants as well as leaf mold, is a close second..

About 26 million Americans endure chronic seasonal allergies, while the number of people with milder symptoms may be as high as 40 million, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

Seasonal allergies are caused by the body’s hypersensitivity to substances in the environment. Symptoms involve primarily the membrane lining the nose, causing allergic rhinitis, or the membrane lining the eyelids and covering the whites of the eyes, causing allergic conjunctivitis.

While there are many Western medications to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergies, these treatments can cause unwanted side effects, such as drowsiness and immune system suppression as well as an over-reliance on medications. These side effects have drawn many people to search for an alternative approach, such as acupuncture and Oriental medicine to manage their allergies..

How Acupuncture Treatments Provide Relief from Allergies

According to Oriental Medicine, allergic rhinitis is related to Wind and a deficiency of the Protective< or Wei Qi. Wei Qi is the Qi that flows at the surface of the body as a protective sheath and is responsible for resistance to colds and other respiratory infections. People with a deficiency of Wei Qi catch colds easily and are more susceptible to allergens.

When treating with acupuncture, underlying imbalances within the body are addressed and a treatment plan is developed to relieve the acute symptoms of allergic rhinitis while also treating the root problems that are contributing to the body’s reaction to allergens. Treatments often include dietary modification, the use of specifically chosen herbal formulas, and acupuncture.
